3 Kid-Friendly Healthy Smoothie Recipes
Finding healthy smoothie recipes that your kid will love can be tough.
I personally love smoothies, so I have experimented plenty with different ingredients and types- green and super clean, tropical and creamy, high-protein.. you name it.
So, I thought for sure that making my son a delicious smoothie he would love would be no problem.
I was wrong.
Instead, I found myself making and remaking smoothies as my disapproving son watched with something that looked like pity. When I brought over the 5th or so iteration, a greenish (but delicious!) blend with bananas and spinach, he looked close to laughter.
“Not quite.”
This post is all about kid-friendly healthy smoothie recipes.
Why I Love Smoothies for My Family
Especially during the warmer months, smoothies are a perfect way to make sure my son gets extra nutrition. Ingredients like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and yogurt provide ample vitamins and minerals. They’re also hydrating. And they’re easy! It’s just a matter of blending.
Smoothies can be a great way to introduce different ingredients to kids, too. My son was (and is) an incredibly picky eater. Making tasty smoothies ended up being a fun way to show him he might actually like some of the foods he was avoiding. They definitely helped him accept spinach, for example. And the taste of ginger.
Here’s three kid-friendly healthy smoothie recipes:
Protein Packed Mango Yogurt Smoothie
Blend all ingredients until smooth:
- 2 fresh ripe mangoes, or about 2 1/2 cups of frozen mangoes
- 1 cup of plain or greek yogurt (or coconut yogurt)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or 2-3 pitted dates
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 1/2 teaspoon lime juice
Notes: Honey can be used instead of maple syrup or dates. Pineapple juice or diced pineapple can also be added for more of a pina colada vibe.
Creamy Almond Date Shake (Dairy Free)
Blend all ingredients until smooth:
- 1 1/2 cup coconut water
- 3-4 pitted dates
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/4 cup almond butter
- 1 cup ice
Notes: I like to use frozen bananas in this recipe. Add-ins like cacao, blueberries, cinnamon, and even goji berries work well in this drink. I think of it as almost a smoothie base, because it’s delicious with a lot of different flavors.
Drink Your OJ Green Smoothie (Dairy Free)
Blend all ingredients until smooth:
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1 ripe frozen banana
- 3 dates (or 1 tablespoon maple syrup)
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 2 handful fresh baby spinach
- 1 tablespoon almond butter
Notes: You can also use a cup of frozen fruit instead of ice- blueberries will help cover the green color if you’re dealing with a kid (or anyone) who doesn’t like green drinks.
